The Worlds Within, an anthology of TCK art and writing: young, global and between cultures Paperback – November 7, 2014

5.0 out of 5 stars 9 ratings

Your mother is Swiss, your father is from the Philippines and you have so far lived in five countries, none of them your passport country. Who are you? Where are you from? Where is home? And what did you eat for breakfast? If you are a friend, this book will guide you. If you are a teacher, it will enlighten you. If you are a parent, it will spell it out for you and if you are an employer, it will convince you. Here they are, the cultural chameleons, the young global nomads, the TCKs - Third Culture Kids - from around the world, telling you their story. They gave us their words and art, so that finally there is a book BY them and not ABOUT them. "A wonderful and timely update to the TCK story as it continues to be lived out by a new generation. It answers the question of 'what is the same' and 'what is different' from the past generations of TCKs." Ruth Van Reken, author of Third Culture Kids: Growing Up Among Worlds and Letters Never Sent. "A much needed book! This book gives children/adolescents a voice regarding their TCK experience, very touching, very poignant." Ryan Haynes, High School Counselor, International School Bangkok, www.isb.ac.th "To read this anthology is to reverberate our stories as a growing tribe. We echo one another. These youths' stories are mine, yours, ours." Myra Dumapias, MSW, CEO of TCKid, Building Cross Cultural Bridges, http://tckid.com "This poignant collection may make you laugh, may make you cry and, if you pay close enough attention, will provide you with deep insight into what it feels like to be a third culture kid." Ellen Mahoney, Founder & CEO, Sea Change Mentoring, www.seachangementoring.com "Just as Lennart Nilsson's spectacular photographs of developing embryos revolutionized our view of human life, so too will The Worlds Within shed light on the development of the TCK personality, from toddler to adult, and all from within the fluid of the TCK's own experience. A fascinating read." Douglas W. Ota, author of Safe Passage: What Mobility Does to People and What International Schools Should Do About It www.safepassage.nl | www.dougota.nl

After having my first idea for a book accepted by the first publisher I approached when I was 22, I decided a career as a full time writer was for me. French Tarts (Octopus) was published in 1985 and I then went on to write 13 word processing handbooks for giants such as Macmillan and McGraw-Hill. Then along came WYSIWYG and Word and I changed direction. First a second cookbook (Dates, Zodiac Publishing) and then I published Forced to Fly and Career in Your Suitcase through my own imprint, Summertime Publishing. I've been abroad for 25 years now. I am one of those people who has inadvertently been presented with the label of Trailing Spouse and so, after years in Dubai (hot), Oman (beautiful), Norway (rainy), a few years back in England (weird after all that time) I was then in Holland (not half bad) for nine years, followed by the last three in Malaysia (hot). I have come to specialise in expat issues and have written the 4th edition of Career in Your Suitcase (co-authored by Colleen Reichrath-Smith) as well as Expat Entrepreneurs and Find Your Passion. I have also published my memoir, A Moving Landscape, and three training programs - How to Write Your Life Stories, Definite Articles and Release the Book within as well as a novel, Sunshine Soup. In 2014 I published an anthology of writings by kids who grew up global, called The Worlds Within and now publish the annual round up of events at the Families in Global Transition conference. I started publishing other authors in 2008 and Summertime Publishing and Springtime Books have helped well over 100 authors to get into print. We offer a complete mentoring, editing, design and print service to our clients. I work with an international team of freelancers – Jack Scott in the UK and Jane Dean in Houston in addition to designers in South Africa, the UK and the Netherlands.

In my life outside work and books, I am married to Ian (my oil and gas man) who plays guitar in a rock band when he is not being oily, and we have two young adults, Sam and Josh, of whom we are inordinately proud.

I grew up in the 'most perfect stone town in England', Stamford, Lincs. The place they recorded Middlemarch. I went to an all girls' school and was still blushing by the time I went to study French at Hull university (and no, I did not go there through clearing, I wanted to go). My father, Peter Gosling, was still writing books at 83 and we have each written 31 books. His book, How to Be a Global Grandparent is available on Amazon. My mother claims she 'can't do anything' but frequently comes first in the village horticultural society painting competition and has been promoted to doing the alter flowers in church. It seems we are a creative lot, for my brother, Patrick Gosling, is a pretty darn good photographer http://www.patrickgosling.com

I am never late! From the 8 years old words of -"One day, I hope it will feel just like my home" to a 14 years old words -"where they would go if the choice was up to them. Some choose to pop thier balloon and stay where they are and some choose to fly back home. I would do neither" made the book hard to put down.

The fact that the words came from so many different ages and so many different locations is proof that there are tons of stories to be told by the global nomads around the world. I hope we hear more and more voices as the world becomes even more global.
These TCKs believe in something and they have the words to share as well as the energy. They have the passion and love of life. They will be able to find among the resources offered by the world of today the means to make some of their dreams come true.

Special thanks to Eva László-Herbert and Jo Parfitt getting these stories out to us.

so many great thoughts and writings from Younger TCKs...

In this book, editors Eva Laszlo-Herbert and Jo Parfitt not only write about TCKs, they give TCKs a platform to express themselves, revealing hidden stories and journeys that are as vibrant and deep as the young people writing them.

“In their minds and hearts a world emerges in which passports, citizenships, skin color, material status, brands, trends, and strategic reasoning have less of an impact. It is a world of images and stories, loosely held together by a whisper: I remember. I feel. I know. I hurt. I heal. I hate. I love. I can. I am.” Eva writes of Third Culture Kids (TCKs) in The Worlds Within Anthology. This opening to the book perfectly contextualized the submissions for me and resonated with my own experiences.

With over 60 submissions from young people around the world, The Worlds Within is a kaleidoscope of art and writing. Through creativity, authors were able to capture the complexity of emotion and identity development that occurs when people live across cultures during formative years. The book is a triumph in the field of Third Culture Literature and has already become a beloved account of the TCK experience for many.

I recommend this book to TCKs, ATCKs, and other global nomads because it is a beautiful ode to the unique combination of experiences and perspectives we share. I also recommend this book for expats or parents of TCKs because it will provide you with insight into emotions that may be unspoken or without an outlet in your own lives and families.

This is a much needed resource for TCK's, their families, friends, teachers and for older TCK's, their future spouses/life partners. Not since "Hidden Immigrants' more than a decade ago has there been such a powerful collection of first person narratives and art work from third culture kids. The World's Within is an amazing expose on TCK identity that spans children of 4 years to young adults in their mid twenties. The variety in voices shows the individual differences, the ways of resilience and creativity with which children to young adults have dealt with multiple country, language, and family changes. At the same time this book does not shy away from the emotional toll that comes from the losses of friendships, cultures, and the feeling of being an outsider except with other TCK's. As a former expatriate who raised children for several years overseas, I highly recommend this courageous, informative book. Bravo to the authors!

A must read for children of international assignees, their families, and international assignment educators! We are finally given an opportunity to hear from the children themselves and experience the life of young expats through their eyes. Children's personal stories and works of art open up the gates of expat compounds and take us readers on a heart-felt journey of what it means to be a Third Culture Kid (TCK): what it means to reconcile multiple cultural affiliations and struggle with a yearning to belong; to loose old friends and find new ones, to learn to live and thrive in a constant swirl of change. I am yet to find another source that presents the story of the Third Culture Kid so fully and so beautifully . - Yulia Carson, Intercultural Trainer and International Youth Educator.

I bought one of these for everyone in my family. Having grown up in Indonesia, China, and Gabon, it succinctly describes the childhood we had through short stories, poetry, and art. It will stay on my coffee table for a long time.
